A thrilling season for choir and audiences alike!
The end of 2009 was a busy and exciting time for the choir, featuring performances of Duruflé’s Requiem, Widor’s Mass for Two Organs and Two Choirs, two Carols and Brass Concerts with Black Dyke, our traditional performance of Handel’s Messiah and a visit to the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester to take part in A Night at the Opera for Raymond Gubbay. . . . equally thrilling 2010 The second half of the season was equally thrilling. A date not to be missed was Sunday 28th March 2010, when Halifax Choral Society joined forces with members of the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union, a first-rate line-up of soloists and the North of England Concert Orchestra at the Victoria Theatre, Halifax for a concert featuring two large scale choral works, Verdi’s thrilling Requiem, and Holst’s scintillating masterpiece Hymn of Jesus. Another work by Holst, his hauntingly beautiful, Invocation for ’cello and orchestra was included in the concert with the renowned Russian ’cellist, Alexander Volpov as soloist. Symphony Hall, Birmingham . . . On Sunday 18th April Halifax Choral Society joined Sheffield Symphonic Chorus and Black Dyke Band in Symphony Hall, Birmingham for a performance of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man. . . . Usher Hall, Edinburgh The 30th May saw the choir joining forces once more with the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh, for a performance of Widor’s monumental Mass for Two Choirs and Two Organs (Organ Mass, for short!) and Kodaly’s uplifting Missa Brevis. Rounding off the season at the Victoria Theatre, Halifax . . . Before their well earned Summer break; the choir ‘let its hair down’ in the now traditional light-hearted Summer Concert with Black Dyke Band featuring a first half with a real transatlantic flavour followed by the familiar and ever popular ‘Prom’ finale. |
